Getting To Know Kelly Johnston
We are really excited to introduce you to our latest merchant Kelly Johnston who does beautiful ceramic art we’re sure you’re going to fall in love with.
Growing up in Dover, Kelly was a frequent visitor to Folkestone’s Sunday market, Tribes in the old highstreet or the Warren during her childhood. Following a move to New Zealand, Kelly decided to relocate back to Kent and Folkestone was her first choice 7 years ago!
There are many things Kelly loves about Folkestone but she especially loves “the beaches, the old high st, walking the hills”. As do many of us who are lucky enough to live in the area or have had the pleasure to do so.
Kelly first got into her craft at school before moving onto a ceramics and teaching degree at Cardiff University. She has now been teaching ceramics for 20 years but since taking up a part time position 6 years ago, has she been able to bring her own ideas to life.
Her latest work is inspired by her personal response to treatment and recovery from breast cancer.
In Kelly’s collection is a reflection on her personal story and journey, the hug figures (also available in turquoise) represent a need to protect. Her terracotta vases are based on healing scars and body changes and the gorgeous robins are a symbol of renewal. Kelly says her craft “quite literally saved my sanity”.
